Pulitzer-Winning Playwright David Mamet Endorses Larry Elder for Governor of California
Los Angeles, CA – August 9, 2021 – Larry Elder, nationally syndicated radio host and newspaper columnist, bestselling author, award-winning documentary filmmaker, and candidate for governor of California, has received an endorsement from playwright, screenwriter, director, and author David Mamet. The gubernatorial recall election is scheduled for September 14, 2021.
Mamet, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his 1984 play Glengarry Glen Ross, held multiple factory jobs and drove taxicabs in his native Chicago before becoming successful. As is demonstrated in many of his plays and writings, Mamet knows the struggles of the American working class.
Mamet is also known for writing and co-writing screenplays for film adaptations of books: The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981); The Verdict (1982), for which he received an Oscar nomination; Rising Sun (1993); Wag the Dog (1997), for which he received another Oscar nomination; and Hannibal (2001).
Mamet employs a metaphor to describe the situation in California and Elder’s candidacy: “The addicted gambler sits over his last few chips and says to his friend, ‘just wait for me until I’ve lost these.’ A good friend would drag him away from the table. Elect Larry Elder.”
Larry Elder agrees: “That’s exactly right. Californians already gambled on a Newsom governorship—and lost big time. I am pleased to have the erudite David Mamet on my side. I ask all Californians to join me in recalling Gavin Newsom from office.”
